La palabra ópalo aparece por primera vez en el Sanscrito, idioma antiguo indú, donde Upala significa piedra preciosa. El ópalo ya entonces era la piedra diosa o reina entre las piedras preciosas Ya que solo ella reunía todos los colores a la vez.

Los ópalos aparecen en gran diversidad de apariencia y por todo el mundo en muchos yacimientos.

Aparte de Australia se encuentran también en México, Brasil, Etiopía, Hunduras, Perú, Ungría, Indonesia los estados unidos y algunos países mas.

Una de sus peculiaridades es la diversidad de formas y estructuras, pueden llegar ser desde un mineral incoloro hasta la piedra preciosa de calidad inigualable.

Desde el punto de vista mineralógico el ópalo es un ácido silícico endurecido con una ligera parte de agua entre su estructura molecular. Los colores espectrales del ópalo encuentran su origen en la refracción que la luz sufre cuando atraviesa las diferentes capas de oxido silícico.

Casi el 90% del volumen de ópalos en calidad de piedra preciosa proviene del denominado “Outback” en el centro de Australia. Esta gran cuenca se llenaba de agua de tanto en tanto a través de millones de años, dándose las condiciones idóneas para para la formación de oxido silícico y así mismo el ópalo.

En Australia sobretodo se encuentran 3 categorias de ópalos:

El ópalo claro del sur de australia es el mas conocido y la ciudad Coober Pedy el centro de su comercialización. La majoría de los ópalos son tallados y las joyas elaboradas vendidas en todo el mundo.

El ópalo negro se extrae en New South Wales, al sureste de la gran cuenca. Su claridad sus exaltados colores y profundidad óptica se la da la piedra madre negra que contrasta con el ópalo.

Lightning Ridge es la zona donde aparece y el ópalo negro es el mas preciado llegando a pagar cifras de ensueño por quilate.

El ópalo Boulder se encuentra en muchas minas del oeste de Queenslands.

La palabra boulder no es de facil traducción, define los ópalos cuya composicion contiene tanto piedra madre como trazos de ópalo en una unión inseparable este conjunto se convierte en el ópalo boulder. Se da tanto en el ópalo cristalino como en el blanco y negro.

Los o´palos de nuez son un subgrupo de los ópalos matrix.

Al igual que las nueces lo preciado está en el interior, siendo el exterior de piedra madre, su interior contiene el ópalo con trazas de matrix. Esta mezcla en su interior crea dibujos y formas de inigualable expresión.

La nuez “Yowah“ es la mas famosa y entre los ópalos-nuez, habiendo alcanzado el estatus de piedra de diseño, verdaderamente es un ópalo

Es la forma en la que se presenta el ópalo lo que les da el nombre, la expresión ópalo de nuez no quiere decir que sea un material fosilizado, no existen, ni existieron arbustos o árboles Yowahs.

Das Wort Opal erschien zum ersten Mal in der Sanskrit – Sprache des frühzeitlichen Indien als Upala , – was wertvoller Stein bedeutet. Opal war schon damals die Göttin und Königin der Edelsteine, denn nur Sie trug die leuchtendsten Farben alle miteinander und auf einmal.

Opale gibt es in verschiedensten Arten und weltweit an vielen Fundstellen. Man findet Opal ausser in Australien auch in Mexiko, Brasilien, Ethiopien, Honduras, Peru, Ungarn, Indonesien,  den USA und manchen anderen Ländern.

Es gibt ihn in einer Vielzahl von Ausprägungen und Gestalten, – vom fast farblosen Mineral bis hin zum höchst qualitativem Edelstein.

Mineralogisch gesehen ist Opal amorphe gehärtete Kieselsäure mit einem leichtem Anteil von Wasser in der Molekularstruktur. Aufgrund einer Lichtbeugung an den vielen unterschiedlichen Lagen von geordnetem Silikat-Oxyd können im Opal alle Spektralfarben erscheinen.

Fast 90% des Welt- Opalvorkommens in Edelsteinqualität kommt aus dem weiten Outback im Zentrum Australiens, – oder dem ‘Grossen Artesischem Becken’.
Dieses füllte sich über einen Zeitraum von Jahrmillionen gelegentlich mit Wasser und bot dadurch hervorragende Bedingungen für die Bildung von Silikat-Oxyd bzw Opal.

Drei Hauptarten von Opal werden in Australien geschürft:

Der Helle Opal aus Süd-Australien ist der am meisten bekannte Opal, mit der Stadt Coober Pedy als das Zentrum des Hellen bzw Weiss- oder Milch- Opals. Diese Opale werden meist in China geschliffen, verarbeitet und weltweit grossteils im Modeschmuck vertrieben.

Schwarz-Opal wird in New South Wales, im Südwesten des ‘Beckens’ gefunden. Durch das dunkle bis schwarze Muttergestein wirken die Farben im Opal besonders klar, stechend und tief. Die Gegend um Lightning Ridge ist das Hauptfundgebiet für diesen Opal. Schwarz-Opal ist der Edelste aller Opale, für den im Weltmarkt höchste Karat-Preise gezahlt werden.

Boulder-Opal  findet man in vielen Minengebieten im Westen Queenslands. Das Wort Boulder  lässt sich nicht einfach übersetzen. Es besagt, dass das Muttergestein (der Boulder, bzw auch die Matrix genannt) von Opal durchsetzt, bzw mit dem Opal verbunden ist und somit Teil des Edelsteins bildet, bzw den Edelopal stabilisiert.

Matrix-Opal  kann jede Art von Edel-Opal enthalten, wie Crystal-/ Weiss-  oder Schwarz-Opal. Nuss-Opale sind eine Untergruppe der Matrix-Opale.
Der Aufbau dieser Edelsteinen gleicht demjenigen einer Hülsenfrucht. Sie haben einen Kern, der mit edlem farbenfrohen Edel-Opal gefüllt sein kann.  Umgeben wird dieser von einigen Schichten/ Schalen Muttergesteins, welche eine aufregend lebendige OpalMatrix enthalten können, – reich an geheimnissvollen Mustern und Bildern.

Die Yowah- Nuss ist die berühmteste von allen Nuss-Opalen, und wird mittlerweile als Internationaler Designer-Edelstein gepriesen. Eine wahre Delikatesse unter den Gems!

Die Art und Weise wie manche dieser Opale aufgebaut sind, erinnert uns an eine Saat oder Nuss. Der Begriff Nuss-Opal kann allerdings für Naturfreunde und Sammler verwirrend sein, da es sich bei Yowah-Nuts nicht um fossilierte oder opalisierte Nüsse oder Ähnliches handelt. Es gab und gibt keinen Yowah-Nuss – Strauch oder Baum!

Boulder- und Nuss-Opale  werden normalerweise in freien Formen geschliffen und gestaltet. Je nachdem, wie der Edelopal in der Matrix sitzt, entscheidet der Schleifer darüber wieviel des Muttergesteins entfernt wird bevor er die Oberfläche poliert. Oft erscheinen erstaunliche Muster und leuchtedste Farben im bisweilen Limonit-, Jasper- oder Hämatit- haltigem Ton-Eisen Muttergestein. Das Ergebnis kann Opal–Kunst höchster Güte sein.

Von allen Edelsteinen weltweit hat nur der Boulder-Opal diese Vielfalt und einen schier unerschöpflichen Reichtum an Farbe.  In Verbindung mit den fantastischen Mustern und Bildern der Opal-Matrix können Boulder-Nuss-Opale erstaunlichste natürliche Kunstwerke darstellen.

The word `Opal´ first appeared in the ancient Sanskrit language as `Upala´ which means `precious stone´. Already back then, Opal resembled the Goddess and Queen of all Gems. Only She was wearing all the precious Colors at the same time.

Opal is found all over the Planet and comes in many shapes and kinds. Qualities range from the simple colorless Mineral up to high-end precious Gems. Apart from Australia, Opal is also found in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Honduras, Hungary, Indonesia, Ethiopia and the USA.

Opal as such is amorphous silica with some content of water in its structure. All spectral colors may be visible due to a diffusion of light in the various layers of arrangements of silica-spheres and gaps in between the molecules.

Worldwide 90% of all Gem-Quality Opal comes from the vast Outback of Central Australia, or the Great Artesian Basin. This huge area used to fill up with water at various times over Millions of years and therefore provided perfect conditions for the creation of Silica-Oxide / Opal. Almost all Australian Opal was formed in the Great Artesian Basin in Cretaceous Sediment.

Three main kinds of Opal are found in Australia:

The Light Opal from South Australia is the kind of Opal that most people associate with the word Opal. Coober Pedy is the Worlds largest Opal town and the biggest producer of White- or Milk Opal.

Black Opal is found in New South Wales, in the southwestern part of the Basin, with the area around Lightning Ridge as its main Origin. Due to the dark / black color of the mother-stone as the background, this Opal appears brighter and the colors are more intense.
Black Opal is regarded as the most precious of all Opals, if not all Gems.

Various kinds of Boulder-Opal are found all over Queensland. Here some Mother-rock (Boulder, Matrix) stays with the Gem-Opal to form part of the Gemstone or to protect and stabilize the Opal.

Boulder-Matrix Opal can contain any kind of Gem-Opal, like Crystal, White or Black Opal. In some Queensland Opal fields like Yowah and Koroit Boulder-Matrix Opal is found in the form and shape of Nuts. Opal-Nuts may carry a Center of deeply colored Gem-Opal, covered by several layers with veins, sparkle or pinfire of Opal through dark red ironstone combined with some vibrant tribal Matrix patterns.

The `Yowah-Nut´ became the most famous of them and is referred to as an International Designer-Gem. The Opal’s shape and composition of layers often remind us of Seeds or Nuts. However, to call them Nuts might be confusing since Yowah-Nuts are not fossilized or opalized nuts or parts of plants. There has never been a Yowah-Nut Tree! Nut-Opals are quite simply one of the greatest Gem-Mysteries of our Planet.
